Well today BarCamp came to Perth. Finally we the people on the West Coast of Australia got to have a BarCamp.

And once again I stepped up to the podium (not that we had any). Not once but twice. In true BarCamp style a presentation panel was thrown together in a mad hurry on the topic of “Start a Web Business” with Steven Hambleton, Miles Burke and Rosemary Lynch and myself. Of course we went overtime, and of course people wanted more so with half the talk done we moved to an afternoon slot.

Eight Pieces of Random

A leaf on Stone in a Zen garden, Random Order.

Don’t usually do these, but this one will be interesting. Kathryn Greenhill has tagged me into the 8 random things meme (and I can’t reuse my twitter posts). I was thinking 8 random things isn’t hard, till you have to do it. So what do you put in a list of 8 random things. Are we talking about 8 random things about me, maybe. When I think about that, this isn’t what this blog is about, so you’re not getting that Kathryn. But then again what about 8 random elements or items that are floating around or influencing me at present.

I wasn’t going to comment on Fred Wilson’s post, but I have been thinking on it for a few days now and frankly Fred has it wrong. He discusses in scant detail that the younger generation are building the future directions of the Web based not on the old school. But the new fresh medium around them and it is this factor that are allowing them to succeed and become young entrepreneurs. Maybe he is just seeing things from the narrow perspective of his VC business environment. This relates in a way to my previous post on age and the web industry and age discrimination. I do note with interest that

Ten Things Web Designers Forget

Are we forgetting the basics

This post should really be called ten things that get up my nose. Many of these points will be old ground for some of you, take them as reminders. They are in the most part just annoyances that with a little work we can all avoid. I’m not totally dogmatic on this list, as in a realistic business world a I know that it is not always possible to do all these things when the economics of web development come into play. But in general we should at least be giving some consideration to these points.
