Thanks people for the kind comments.

One very interesting aspect is that ACS has now become the gatekeeper for immigration. Seems you need to be have ACS recognise (approve) your web qualifications or experience. This is interesting given that most of the people in the ACS have no idea about the web industry and only look at things from an IT view point.

@Russ - Good to hear. I can see great things with a combined WIPA/AWIA team. World conquest maybe? ;)

@Paul Wallbank - combining of these associations does cause issues, we don't want the web industry to be a watered down section of say an ACS or AIIA or even AIMIA. I believe it should stand separate like Auditors do to Accountants...

Great post Gary! I'm only a new to AWIA (and not even a member yet) but can feel the sense that it is very Perth centric. A merge with an East Coast group would be very interesting

Great post Gary. Really informative. I didn't even know about several of these. A succinct overview of function / purpose, challenges and relevance in today's industry. A lot to think about!

Gary, I think the problem is there are simply too many associations with overlapping focus.

Another problem, as you've alluded to in the post, is some of the organisations have ego issues and can't see the value in uniting with others.

I'm not sure if this will ever change given the nature of the industry. In Sydney there seems to be more groups and associations then ever before.

As these groups breed more events, we're seeing the same people giving the same presentations to the same audiences, particularly in the social media space which only increases that sector's tendency to be an echo chamber.

All I can think of is we have to be discerning with the organisations we join and events we attend as well as being straight forward with our reasons why we don't associate with the others.

Cheers,

Paul

There are discussions going on with AWIA and WIPA about merging. From what I understand, it is something both committees really want, it is just a matter of when and how (the paperwork is the biggest issue).
